Transform a Thrift Find

If a piece has the right shape, Donut can turn it into something louder than it started.

What Donut Looks For

Not every thrift find is ready. These ones are.

Substantial weight

Thin, pilled, or worn-through fabric absorbs dye unevenly and rarely finishes well. Thicker cotton, wool blends, and heavy fleece hold color the way the piece deserves.

Interesting silhouette

Outdated fits, exaggerated proportions, and weird cuts are exactly the point. The dye work will amplify whatever shape the piece already has.

Natural fiber content

Cotton, linen, and wool dye deeply. Polyester blends resist fiber-reactive dye. Pieces with at least 80% natural fiber content tend to move through the process well.

No obvious damage

Thin spots, fraying seams, and active holes get worse in the dye bath. Structural integrity matters more than surface staining — those usually come out anyway.

Evaluation Process

Every thrift piece gets looked at before work starts.

Thrift finds are the most variable lane in the studio. Dye behavior depends on the original fiber, prior washing, and whether the piece has any coatings or finishes from its previous life. A short review protects everyone.

  1. Send photos first

A few clear photos — front, back, fabric tag, and any damage — let Donut make a real call before the piece moves.

  2. Wait for confirmation

Thrift finds get reviewed individually. Do not ship until Donut confirms the piece is a good candidate and gives a green light on the project.

  3. Ship clean and dry

Pre-wash the garment before sending. No perfume, pet hair, or loose debris. Pack it simply — a poly bag inside a box works fine.

Ready to Send?

Start with a photo, not a package.

Reach out with photos before shipping anything. Thrift lane slots are limited and reviewed in the order they arrive. Pieces that skip the photo step will be held until confirmation catches up.
